What it is
Olive leaf contains an antioxidant known as oleuropein which has antibacterial, antiviral and antiparasitic effects. Oleuropein is also useful in the management of metabolic syndrome, also known as syndrome X, characterised by high blood sugar, high blood pressure, high cholesterol and weight gain.
Olive leaf extract has a wide number of consituents, including oleuropien and several types of flavonoids. Oleuropein is a polyphenolic fraction that is the most important component of the olive leaf and have stong anti-oxidant properties. Studies show that oleuropein inhibits LDL oxidation, which explains its role in the prevention of coronary heart disease. Olive leaf extract has been shown to be effective in killing bacteria, fungus and viruses. Oleuropeoside has been shown to have vasodilatory effects on vascular muscle epothelium. Olive leaf is believed to have hypoglyceamic activity through two mechanisms: the potentiation of glucose-induced insulin release, and increased peripheral uptake of glucose. Studies show that oleuropein enhances thermogenesis increasing UCP1 content in IBAT and noradrenaline and adrenaline secretions.
